A custom design allows the best use of a space whether it be for form, function, or both. This Montessori school in Chicago was left with limited space after the creation of several large classrooms and facilities. The small hallway alcove shown was only 6' x 9' but became an office with two desks (one tucked in behind the short partition in the photo), nine file drawers, ceiling height bookcases and wrought iron ivy trim.
The client later added a portable rolling library ladder to make access to the upper shelves easier in the 12' high room. The ladder was also used in an adjacent room that had floor to ceiling shelving.
